Graduate emphasis is in environmental issues (Groundwater studies), Engineering Geology, Environmental geology (geological hazards studies), Mineral exploration and Mining Environmental Management.  All registered graduate students in the Department are required to take relevant courses as prescribed by the Department. Additionally, all graduate students are expected to participate fully in seminars held in the Department and also make presentations showing their progress of work.

Requirements

Both programmes should be in one of the following areas:

  • Engineering geology
  • Mineral Exploration
  • Hydrogeology
  • Mining Environmental Management

The minimum requirement for admission to a graduate programme is a good first degree preferably First or Second Class Upper Division in Geological Engineering, Geology or a related field in the Earth Sciences. Candidates with lower division degrees will have to attend and pass an interview prior to admission. All candidates with a first degree are initially registered for MPhil programme.

Candidates who demonstrate an outstanding potential for higher degree research may be recommended to the School of Graduate Studies for a transfer onto a PhD programme after a period of 15 months. Candidates with MPhil in Geological Engineering, Geology or a relevant related field are allowed to register for a direct PhD.
